An excellent piece, as usual. I think I've read somewhere that this new "space race" is based on the accepted premise that the earth will be destroyed. Having destroyed our own world, we now want to go forth bravely into other worlds, perhaps to destroy them too. How horrible. Thanks for this thoughtful and urgently needed essay.
