By the way, Michael, the “voice” you write with is not the same as the voice you talk with. You may come across online pieces that contradict this. But the two are very different.
Pick up a favorite novel and read for a few pages. If you are quiet and do not allow yourself to become distracted by TV, radio lyrics, or other people’s words—you may “hear” a silent voice in your head when you put the book down, a voice that has something to say about what you’ve just read. That’s part of it.
The other part is whatever you’ve learned about how to use language as a tool for expressing what’s in your heart. Those two functions work together to create your own unique voice as a writer.
