Yes, love is eternal. It never goes away. I am inspired my your excellent metaphor, which says so much: "Love for another is never lost... We love with a torrent of merging tributaries."
Permit me to add to this thought by paraphrasing the writer Jean Rhys, who wrote 'Wide Sargasso Sea': Some loves are raging rivers, others tiny tributaries. But all flow into the lake. We must keep feeding the lake.
