This is so true! When I began sailing, my instructor was with me on every trip. I could always turn to him when we got into a tricky situation. The sea is always changing. Even when I had control of the boat, I was never really sailing. I didn't learn to sail until I had to do everything by myself. And I found resources within myself I did not know existed until that moment.
